What certifications will get me a job?
Thursday, 31 July 2003

Like many people I have come to the point where I need some certifications to get a position. After completing Network Administration, Network Support and PC Support through TAFE. I now find that these qualifications alone are not enough to get an entry level job.

What some recruitment agencies have said
The general response I have had from recruitment agencies is some experience and some certifications are what employers are looking for in today’s IT job market.

But what certifications? I have seen many job advertisements’ and some want MSCE, MSCA, CCNE etc. Do I take I go out and spend and spend $60,000 or more on certifications in the hope that they may get me a new job by making me more employable? And all this just to obtain a job paying $30,000 a year?

What some of the companies that provide certifications have said
Certifications are what employers want and they will help you get a job. Some also mention the mysterious hidden job market. So well hidden I have never seen it.

What people working in the industry have said
  1. Get the certifications to get the job i.e. be over-qualified and then once you have the job forget about them unless the employer pays for you to get re-certified every two years or so.
  2. Be in the right place at the right time contracting and pick up a permanent role.
  3. Don’t get them at all they didn’t help me get this job.

I would like to know other peoples thoughts on this before I make a decision about whether to pursue any more. I have had some contract work and TAFE qualifications.

Luck and Certifications

Hear Hear. I'm one of those jack-of-all-trades in IT. I did everything from Help Desk, Desktop Support, Network Administration, IT Management, etc. And I got more work solely on my reputation and experience. Unfortunately in December 2001 I lost my government contract due to financial problems within my dept. So I decided I'd forego looking for work and set about getting some certifications under my belt. Like many people, little did I know there was going to be an IT employment slump.

I'm now a Lotus Notes Admonition and Lotus Notes Developer with CLPs. I've also got a CNA in Novell and over twelve years of IT industry experience.

And I still can't get work.

I've lowered my hourly rates numerous times and still can't get anything. Recruiters don't want to know me unless I can give them contacts or connections. I've even moved between states in Australia to locate more work. I've sent in over a hundred job applications and I've attended near on forty job interviews (admittedly about eight of those with recruiters.) I've found most jobs are pulled because the company decided they can't fund the position. To add salt to the wound I've found that if I'm going through a recruitment company, the agent doesn't even bother to tell me. I have to ring and ring and ring. Leave messages and send emails until I annoy the agent so much that they finally relent and tell me the truth. (It's like they're scared of me or something.)

Life isn't just hard for IT these days, it's beyond difficult to the point of manic depression.

getting a job

I have to agree with these comments, I did some sco unix training and developed my linux and unix skills on the job, but now I finding it impossible to find employment. The Jobnetwork also treats me like a leech on the unemployment system, I am doing voluntary work outside the Jobnetwork system so that I am keep my brain active.
